كيف MIKE MENTZER: A BODYBUILDING PROGRAM FOR TRAINEES WITH GOOD TO EXCELLENT RECOVERY ABILITY

Some viewers have inquired what Mike’s original four-day split routine looked like, back when he was training for the Mr. Universe competition. It was virtually identical to the program he advocates in this video. Prior to 1977, Mike trained using a full body three times per week program (approximately two to five sets per muscle group). Such a program, Mike later discovered, proved to be too much for the average trainee to recover from. Consequently, he reduced the number of recommended sets to one per exercise, and counselled not to perform more than two sets per muscle group with three to five days off in between workouts. This worked wonderfully for most of his training clients. However, Mike also mentioned that a small percentage of his clients (those with genetics indicating a greater than average recovery ability), could actually tolerate a little more volume and frequency than the majority of his clients. Such individuals will find this program to be of interest. Culled from a training video Mike wrote and produced in 1983, Mike provides an on-camera intro and closing to the video, with the bulk of the information narrated by his co-producer Jay Stevens. In order to remove the heavy synthesizer music that accompanied the original video, I have had to run the narration through several AI filters, which succeeded in removing the music, but the AI effect can be detected. Still, I think it allows for better comprehension of the instructions Mike laid down in his script for the video. The viewer will also note that the gym attire from 1983 modelled by the on-camera talent (Ray Mentzer and Cathy Gelfo) are certainly reflective of the era in in which this video was produced.

This video, then, is presented for historical purposes and for the benefit of those whose genetics permit a little more volume and frequency. Even these people, however, should be aware that as they progress (growing bigger and stronger), the volume and frequency of their training will have to be scaled back in order to permit the growth they have stimulated to take place. Even Mike, with his genetics and admitted use of steroids when competing found that he had to insert additional rest days into his schedule to allow for recovery and growth while using this routine. He would later claim that “despite being the arch-advocate of lesser training [back when he competed], I was still overtraining.” Consequently, he further examined and refined the theory of high-intensity training to the version he presented in the mid to late 90s (the specifics of which are available in other videos on this channel).
